Wistfully Empty, 2022

Wistfully Empty is an homage of sorts to not only the places, whose shapes, colors, and sounds remain with me in memory even as they dissipate from the versions I once knew, but also to the people, the moments, the love, and the losses of all experiences held in my past.

For the past is not the present, as hindsight is unfortunately not foresight. Things have since changed and some good-byes can never be rescinded as the silences and passages of time can no longer be filled. Coming to terms with this reality, I returned to these places to cast light into the empty spaces that remain, searching for amends and to collect the pieces of myself lost along the way, as well as the memory of the people I love.

Over the course of a year, I made four separate trips to visit my family home and capture photographs in the surrounding areas on both 35mm and 4x5 film. The places documented expand along the stretch of I-80 and the greater surrounding spaces between Auburn and Sacramento including some in and outside my family home and the nearby neighborhoods.
